Passport and Visa requirements when travelling Peru

I have never had any problem travelling to from or in Peru. The basic requirements are an up to date passport and as a tourist you can stay up to 90 days on a simple entry visa-on-arrival, a short one page document which you are given on the plane fill in and hand in at customs/immagration on your way through. If you want to travel in Peru for more than 90 days, as I did a few years back, you need to leave the country for a minimum of 24 hours and then you can return after filling in the same simple form, valid for another 90 days. Of course as in every country it's at the discretion of the custom officials, but again for a normal tourist with full and up to date passport it's all very easy. Check the expiry date on your passport well before leaving - in fact check it now.

You are also required to have a return ticket and enough cash for your trip. You may or may not be asked for proof of this.

One thing I would recommend is, say if you intend to go on one of our eco Trails and Vision Quests and want to spend an extra week travelling around giving you a total of 4 weeks in Peru, it might be wise to put down on your Visa that you intend to be in Peru for six weeks or even the full ninety days. Some of the reasons being, your homeward bound flight could be delayed, you might want to extend your stay, or if something happened such as you sustain an injury, or got sick you might have to stay an extra few weeks. It cost nothing and it could save a lot of bureaucratic hassle. You are allowed ninety days so why not give yourself a buffer, especially if your flight ticket is of the sort that the return date can be changed for a small fee. (Recommended).

This is the situation that exists if you're a citizen of America, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa or the European Union at the time of writing, July of 2008. You might want to check with a good local travel agent or your Peruvian Embassy, well before your departure date just to make sure. There is also a requirement for some inoculation such as Yellow Fever although I've never been asked to show proof of this.
