Yarina Village - Amazon region Peru
Yarina on the Yanu Yacu river, one of the main tributaries of the Amazon, has 150 Inhabitants, (40 families) with their own kindergarden and primary school which, like all of the village, they built themselves.
I visited and stayed in the Yarina village in the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve, for a period of time in September 2007. I was deeply impressed with how this small village, (with no funding or help whatsoever from the Peruvian government), had collectively decided to become deeply involved with preserving and supporting the ecology of their surrounding river and jungle.
It's especially impressive when you consider their circumstances which are extremely frugal to say the least. They are also some distance from the nearest town which can only be reached by river. There are no roads. Their contact with the outside world is through river and by radio.
Ecological preservation of the Amazon
They have two organized groups of people, who work to protect the environment with the following projects:
- Turtle reproduction and protection. (A lot of people in this region eat turtles as a delicacy and they are becoming endangered as a result).
- Medicinal plants nursery garden and cultivation.
- Reforestation of palmettos.
- Arahuana fish - reproduction and protection of this species.
It was decided to start The Yarina Village Project to support them in whatever way possible. It might be through donations of money, materials or whatever.
Fundraising to support Yarina Village's ecological initiative
As part of this project I will donate 10% of all money received for the Trails of the Spirit Journeys. I will also donate 10% from sales of my art. (I'm a full time artist when I'm not working on my web sites - you can see my work here a lot of it is inspired by my visits to Peru).
There are also other fundraising ideas in the pipeline. Please help in any way you can. I'll be outlining specific ways you can help plus I'll be putting up a lot more information on the Yarina Village Project Peru. If you have any ideas or feel inspired to help please CONTACT me.
